Bruges Uncovered: A Quick Escape to Medieval Magic

Welcome to Bruges - a fairy-tale city that looks like it popped straight out of a storybook!

With its medieval architecture, winding cobblestone streets, and dreamy canals, every corner feels like a step back in time. Bruges is nicknamed the “Venice of the North”, thanks to its 12 kilometers of canals weaving through the city.

Whether you’ve got just a few hours or a full day (or a few days), Bruges’ slow pace, charming squares, and historic beauty make it the perfect place to wander, sip hot chocolate, and soak in its magical atmosphere.

Only 24 hours to spare? Here’s your perfect guide to experiencing the magic of this enchanting city.

Step Into History at Grote Markt

The heart of Bruges, Grote Markt, is surrounded by stunning medieval buildings. On the north and west sides, you’ll see those iconic, brightly painted gabled houses that look like they belong on a gingerbread box. These were once busy merchant guild headquarters, but today they’ve traded trade deals for menus, housing some of the square’s liveliest cafes and restaurants.

Right in the center, you can't miss the statue of local heroes Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, who lead the square's charge toward the Provincial Court. This Neo-Gothic beauty looks like a fairytale castle and makes for the perfect dramatic backdrop while you soak in the atmosphere.

Provincial Court

The square’s centerpiece, the Belfry Tower, rewards those who climb its 366 steps with breathtaking views of the city.

Fun Fact: The Belfry wasn’t just for show - it served as both a lookout tower and bell tower. Today, its bells still ring out across Bruges, marking the passage of time in this storybook city.

Picture-Perfect Canals at Rozenhoedkaai

If there’s a single spot that screams “Bruges postcard,” it’s Rozenhoedkaai (Rosary Quay). The way the medieval buildings hit the water is pure magic—it’s the most photographed corner of the city for a reason, and it looks even more surreal if you catch it just as the evening lights turn on.

Fun Fact: This canal once ferried goods for merchants. Now? It’s all about sightseeing, romantic boat rides, and photo ops galore.

Wander the Charming Streets

One of the best ways to soak in Bruges is simply by wandering. Every turn reveals quaint streets and cobblestone paths that feel like they haven't changed in centuries.

You never know what hidden gem you’ll stumble upon, from quiet, picturesque squares to tucked-away bridges. It’s the kind of city where getting a little lost is actually the best part of the plan.

Admire the Grandeur of Burg Square

Just a few minutes’ walk from the main market, you’ll find yourself in Burg Square, the city’s historic soul. It’s home to the stunning City Hall (Stadhuis), one of the oldest and most ornate town halls in the region.

The architecture here is next-level—the Stadhuis looks more like a golden palace than a government building! It’s the perfect spot to stop and admire the intricate details before continuing your stroll through the city's winding alleys.

Discover the Quiet Beauty of St. Mary Magdalene

While the Church of Our Lady gets all the fame for its height, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene is a hidden gem that’s well worth a detour. It’s tucked away from the main tourist trail, offering a much more peaceful and local vibe compared to the busier spots in the city center.

What makes this church so unique is its surprisingly modern interior; inside, you’ll find a contemporary swing and experimental art installations that feel totally unexpected for a historic building. It’s the perfect place to sit back, reflect, and enjoy a side of Bruges that most travelers completely miss!

Indulge in Belgian Waffles & Chocolate

While in Brussels, I never got the chance to try a Liège waffle - but I’d heard Bruges has some of the best in Belgium. Lucky me! The waffles are dense, caramelised, and perfectly sweet, and with so many tempting variations to choose from, it was impossible to go wrong. (I got it going back to Brussels 😂)

And of course, Belgian chocolate is everywhere - from tiny artisanal shops tucked along cobblestone streets to world-famous chocolatiers proudly displaying their glossy pralines behind glass windows. It’s almost impossible to walk a few steps in Bruges without being tempted by the rich scent of cocoa.

Tasting a waffle in Bruges felt like the perfect reward for wandering the canals and cobblestone streets - and it was every bit as magical as I’d hoped!

Fun Fact: Liège waffles are made with chunks of sugar that caramelise as they cook, giving them that irresistible sweet crunch.

Getting to the City Centre

From Bruges Station, you can walk to the city centre in about 20–25 minutes, or hop on a bus for a quick ride. Once you’re there, exploring is best done entirely on foot, which makes wandering the canals, streets, and squares a relaxing and immersive experience.

How to Get to Bruges from Brussels (Round Trip)

Bruges is easy to reach from Brussels by train. Direct trains run from Brussels Central (or Brussels Midi) to Bruges Station, taking around 1 hour and 10 minutes. Trains are frequent, making it easy to pick a schedule that fits your afternoon-to-next-day plan perfectly.

Travel Tip: Check the train times ahead to make the most of your short stay - Bruges is small, but you’ll want every minute!

Bruges may be small, but in just an afternoon and the following day, you can experience its canals, chocolate, history, and charm. Short stays never felt so magical!
