Lugano, Switzerland: A Scenic Day Trip from Milan

Switzerland has always been a dream destination of mine, with its picturesque landscapes and charming towns. While Grindelwald tops my bucket list, visiting Lugano felt like a delightful step closer to achieving that dream.

Lugano Lake from Monte Bre

Nestled between serene mountains and the sparkling waters of Lake Lugano, this charming lakeside city blends Swiss efficiency with Mediterranean charm. Just an hour away from the bustling streets of Milan, Lugano offers a perfect escape into the beauty of Switzerland’s Italian-speaking region.

Whether you are craving breathtaking views, delicious Swiss-Italian cuisine, or a leisurely stroll through picturesque streets, a day trip to Lugano promises a refreshing change of pace.

The Journey: Milan to Lugano

  • We started our adventure with a train ride from Milano Centrale to Lugano.
  • The journey took just over an hour, with scenic views of lake and the surrounding mountains along the way.
  • As we arrived at Lugano station, the calm and charm of Switzerland welcomed us instantly.

A Quiet Sunday in Lugano

Lugano has a laid-back vibe, and our visit on a Sunday made it even quieter. While many shops were closed (hello, Sunday traditions!), we still had an amazing time exploring this lakeside gem. 😁

no crowd
  • Lunch Near Lake Lugano – Our first stop was a cozy restaurant close to the lake, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch with glimpses of the serene waters. Though not right by the lake, the peaceful atmosphere of Lugano still added a magical touch to our meal.

  • Strolling by the Lake and Parks - After lunch, we walked along the lake towards the Parco Ciani, one of Switzerland’s most stunning parks, thanks to its picturesque lakeside setting, majestic trees, expansive playground, and charming walkways that weave through statues, fountains, and vibrant flower beds.

Along the way, we passed stunning historical buildings, modern structures, and even a McDonald's that looks far fancier than your usual fast-food joint—because, of course, even McDonald's in Switzerland has style!

The tranquility of the area was unmatched, making it the perfect spot for photos and soaking in the views. One popular photo spot in Parco Ciani is the Cancello sul Lago di Lugano.

  • Lake Activities - While we noticed fewer crowds, it seemed that water activities like lake cruising might not operate on Sundays. Nonetheless, the calmness of the lake made for a perfect backdrop to our relaxing stroll.

  • Little Tourist Train – Tired of walking? Hop aboard the Trenino Turistico Lugano, the cutest little train in town, for a fun and breezy ride through Lugano’s scenic streets! This colorful mini-train lets you sit back and enjoy the city’s highlights, from charming old-town alleys to stunning lake views, without wearing out your feet. It’s a fantastic way to explore with a touch of whimsy, especially for families and those who want to soak in the sights effortlessly!

Up, Up, and Away: Monte Brè

A visit to Lugano wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the breathtaking views from one of its mountain peaks. The two most popular choices among tourists are Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè. While Monte San Salvatore is a favorite for many, we opted for Monte Brè as it was closer and more convenient for our itinerary.

  • We hopped on bus 12 to the funicular station, which whisked us up to the summit of Monte Brè. The funicular fare cost CHF 26 (return) and took 10 minutes to reach the top.
  • Standing at 925 metres high, we were greeted with magnificent panoramic views of Lugano, the lake, and the surrounding mountains.
  • Despite the chilly weather, the sun was shining, and the combination of cold air and warm sunshine was simply refreshing.
  • There are two charming restaurants at the summit with sun terraces, and we stopped by one to treat ourselves to cold drinks while enjoying the spectacular scenery. It was a moment of pure bliss.
  • After spending over an hour soaking in the views and snapping countless photos, we made our way back down via the funicular.

Back to Lugano’s Central Area

  • Returning to the central area, we took some time to browse the few shops that were open. Souvenirs and Swiss chocolates made it into our shopping bags (naturally!).
  • We made a quick stop at the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, a stunning example of Gothic architecture, and took a moment to admire its intricate interior, which features beautiful stained glass windows and impressive vaulted ceilings.

Tips for visiting Lugano

  • Plan for Sunday closures - It  is best to avoid visiting on a Sunday, as many shops and activities may be closed. If you do go, focus on outdoor attractions and scenic spots instead.

  • Decide whether to take the funicular or hike up to Monte Brè – It's possible to hike up and down to the summit of Monte Brè via a straightforward trail with well-marked paths along the way. According to those who’ve hiked it, the journey takes less than two hours one way, though it may vary depending on your pace. However, if time is tight, opt for the funicular. Regardless of which option you choose, the views are absolutely worth it.

Our day trip to Lugano was a beautiful mix of relaxation and exploration. From the serene lake to the stunning views atop Monte Brè, Lugano offered us a taste of Swiss charm that felt like a dream come true. Whether you’re looking for peace and quiet or breathtaking scenery, Lugano won’t disappoint.
